Web safe fonts are those which will be displayed perfectly on any operating system, you can see the list of standard websafe fonts following. Using anything other than a web safe font can result in your site not displaying correctly on some computers (e.g. apple computers, or those using linux). See the list of websafe fonts at the end of this article
BUT there are new technologies which some developers use to "embed" fonts into a website so they show perfectly on any system now, see below:
